Kompaktors | Roller Presses

A roller press, also known as a kompaktor, roller press or briquetting press, is used to compact fine-grained materials into solid press agglomerates. This can be used to produce flakes or briquettes. In combination with grinding and classification technologies, it is possible to achieve dry granulation.

In kompaktors, the powdery bulk material is compacted between two counter-rotating rollers. As the material is drawn into the roller gap, it is subjected to compressive forces, resulting in the formation of effective binding forces between the particles.

Advantages of compacting for your product and production

  • Improvement of the flow properties
  • Reduction of dust pollution,
  • Improvement of the through-flow
  • Improvement of the distribution behaviour
  • Customised particle size and shape
  • Increased bulk density
  • Modified reaction behaviour (such as solubility)

Dry granulation and wet granulation

There are two different processes for granulation:

Dry granulation:

  • Compacting and subsequent grinding
  • No addition of binders required
  • No drying necessary
  • Especially for products that are sensitive to heat or moisture
  • End product: granular, free-flowing mixture of uniform size

Wet granulation:

  • Addition of binders in liquid form (water or alcohol-based)
  • Drying process necessary
  • Granulation following compaction and drying
  • Possible negative impact on the quality of the granules
