Use of aluminum oxides, zirconium oxides, silicates and silicon carbides

For production of technical ceramics, aluminum oxides, zirconium oxides, silicates and silicon carbides are key materials.
Technical ceramics are used in the applications for metalworking, electronics, automotive engineering, medical technology, optical technologies, ballistics and many more.
Aluminum oxide is and will become the most widely used ceramic high-performance material and is used as wear and corrosion protection in plant construction, as well.
The production of finest powders sets highest demand on machinery and equipment for fine grinding and classifying, in particular on wear protection, fineness, low contamination.

Dry grinding proves its superiority

Jet milling is one possibility to achieve increasingly higher fineness requirements, but despite being energetically the most expensive process. Jet milling is the predestinated process for ceramic materials that do hardly allow contamination (e.g. SIC).

Standard products with an oversize of at least 5 μm are mainly dry produced be means of wear protected Alpine Super Orion SF ball mill / classifiers loops.

Finenesses below 1 μm, which are currently produced on wet mills, can be processed by our vertical agitator ball mill PULVIS in a dry way, abrasion-free and with low energy consumption. In addition, this method provides a much steeper particle size distribution compared to wet grinding.

For the highest quality requirements of ceramic materials, the PULVIS is the perfect grinding system. It is available in sizes with a drive power of up to 75 kW.

The alternative to wet grinding: Pulvis

The PULVIS offers compact, low-abrasion and low-energy fine grinding of ceramic raw materials. Compared to wet grinding, the particle size distribution is much steeper with a sharply defined top grain.

The energy saving compared to jet milling is up to 40 %.

Case Study: Aluminium oxide with the PULVIS

In a customer trial with aluminium oxide, there were four key features that finally tipped the scales in favor of installing a plant with the PULVIS agitated mediamill:

  •  simplified dry grinding process without jet mills or wet mills
  •  steeper particle size distribution than with conventional wet mills with hydrocyclones due to state-of-the-art classifiers
  •  lower investment costs
  •  lower operating costs due to energy savings
