Oriented films for flexible packaging

MDO films are setting new standards in film technology. Through the targeted orientation of the polymer chains in the machine direction, they can significantly enhance stiffness, transparency and barrier performance. This results in high-performance films that meet even the most demanding requirements in flexible packaging applications.

At the same time, MDO films enable thinner and lighter packaging without compromising on functionality. In combination with PE or PP monomaterial structures, they support the development of fully recyclable packaging concepts. Whether food packaging, stand-up pouches, flow packs or laminate structures: MDO films combine maximum performance with the efficient use of resources.

MDO films in practice

MDO films can be used flexibly for a wide variety of packaging applications, whether it requires a thinner structure, greater rigidity or a more recyclable mono-composite.

MDO laminating film

Thinner, yet fully capable

PE & PP laminating film with an oxygen barrier

Oriented PE and PP lamination films can be produced in significantly thinner gauges without compromising strength. With or without a barrier layer, they form the basis for recyclable monomaterial composites while maintaining the same performance.

Breathable hygiene film

Breathable, yet waterproof

Breathable film for hygiene products

Breathable MDO films allow water vapour to escape whilst retaining liquids, making them ideal for hygiene products. The addition of calcium carbonate to the formulation and the stretching process create microporous structures for breathability and comfort.

Products in flow packs

Packaged to minimise material use, securely sealed

Flowpacks

Flow packs made from stretched MDO film combine high rigidity with a thin film thickness. This saves material per package and facilitates recyclable monostructures, without compromising on machine runnability or the seal.

Compression packaging made from MDO film

Volume reduced, shape retained

Compression packaging

Compression packaging keeps bulky goods in a compressed state to save space. Stretched MDO films provide the necessary rigidity and tear resistance to ensure that the packaging withstands the pressure and reduces the transport volume.

Alpine MDO technology

The TRIO system developed by Alpine and the unique vacuum roller minimise the ‘neck-in’ effect during stretching. At the same time, both technologies improve the flatness of the film and create optimal conditions for subsequent processing stages.
